FUNDAMENTALS OF SELF-ASSEMBLY AND SELF-ASSEMBLED MONOLAYERS  1. Self-assembly is the spontaneous organization of building blocks with dimensions that are beyond the sub-nanometer scale of most molecules or macromolecules. 2. There are five prominent principles that need to be taken into consideration. These are  i) building blocks, scale, shape, surface structure ii) attractive and repulsive interactions between building blocks, equilibrium seperation iii) reversible association-dissociation and adaptable motion of building blocks iv) building block interactions with solvents, interfaces v) building-blocks dynamics, mass transport and agitation. 3. A challenge for perfecting structures made by self-assembly chemistry is to find ways of synthesizing(bottom-up) or fabricationg(top-down) building blocks with right composition, size and shape.  4. A demanding task is to make building blocks with a particular surface structure, charge and functionality. 5. Surface properties will ...

Nano Applications

NANOTECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY Nanotechnology can be incorporated in various automobile parts such as paint, batteries, fuel cells, tires, mirrors, and windows . The introduction of nanotechnologies enhances the performance of existing technologies for the automobile industry. NANOPARTICLE IN PAINT: Nano titanium dioxide is used in paint to exploit two of its excellent properties:   1) Photocatalytic activity and 2) UV-protection The combination of the photocatalytic effect, along with hydrophilic properties results in a paints' self cleaning effect. NANO FOR BATTERY: The main drivers for research in battery technology are to find materials suitahble for use as electrodes with high surface area as possible. This allows charge to flow more freely, resulting in higher capacity and shorter charge/discharge cycles. NANO IN FUEL CELLS: Fuel cells contain membranes that allow hydrogen ions to pass through the cell but do not allow other atoms or ions, such as oxy...
